Haiku Battle.

This is a haiku battle. The challenge is simply to make more interesting haikus than the other person. We can either have set topics or not. Thus, the first two rounds are to get acquainted with one another, and the last three will be for actual haikus. The PRO and CON positions mean nothing. I only chose PRO because green is a nicer color to surround my name and avatar than red. For those who don't know, the structure of a haiku is 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second line, and...
Evolution

To clarify things and set some parameters, we'll set aside R1 for discussion of rules and definitions. Here's what I have: 1. The contender must be against evolution. He can believe whatever they want, but he must not believe in evolution. I want to convince people, and I don't need a Devil's Advocate. 2. The contender must also have some capacity to reason. He cannot make arguments like "The Bible says God exists, and it is the flawless word of God, ergo God is real." 3. The contender mus...
5a. Civil Unions

Any rights which the government deigns to give to the citizens being governed by that government must be given to all citizens. There are at present hundreds of rights which exist for couples by way of the government and they must be universally applied for gay couples as well. If a couple wishes to enter a civil union it should not be for the government to say that you can't have rights because we don't allow those rights except for parties of opposite genders. We can understand the argument...
4b. Campaign Finance Reform

A campaign lives and dies by money and it's getting worse and worse every election cycle. When money is more important than votes, we find that anybody we need to elect is going to be far more indebted to the money than the people. The current system is a legal nightmare, a joke, and an albatross around the necks of everybody in politics. I don't know what the solutions to the problems are, but I do know that the problems are not going to be solved by doing nothing. We need to reform the syst...
Evolution is not part of atheism.

Despite common claims that evolution is simply preaching atheism, this is not the case. Evolution is a well established and evidenced theory which explains the progression, form, organization, and distribution of all the life on this planet without the need of any outside forces. Atheism is simply the lack of belief in God. There were plenty of atheists before Darwinian evolution became widely known and easily properly understood as the mechanism for the design of life. While there is some co...
Marijuana should be legalized as a spark for small business ownership

I would firstly like to state that I am aware of the vast amount of arguments for and against that have been used in the past. I am going to attempt to illustrate my position not from the standpoint of morality or assertation of societal acceptance but from a strictly business standpoint since nearly every law that has been created has been made from a strictly monetary stand point. The points of public safety will no doubt arise and to that I will make a compelling argument as to the absurdity...
Source Code without Tabs is Superior to Source Code with Tabs

This debate is in regards to computer programming, but anyone is welcomed to accept the challenge. The only caveat is that programmer speak may creep into the debate, though I've made every attempt to avoid undefined geek-speak for the benefit of the readers. Definitions: Source code: The original textual form of a computer program Tab: The digital character representing white space - usually wider than a single character Superior: Having greater value Source Code Readability: The ease to...
4a. Campaign Finance Reform

Politics is a messy business. People with money finance campaigns, and in return, they expect those politicians whose campaigns they financed to help them out a bit. No more should this occur. These are not democratic ideals. This country was founded on the notion that every taxpayer should have the same amount of say in government. That, unfortunately, does not hold true. To fix the situation, we must reform campaign finance. No more will we be a society where the wealthy and powerful make the...
3b. Border Fence

Some of you may be wondering, what exactly do I mean by a border fence? Some of you may think you already know. I will define border fence: Border Fence: The fence around the border of any prison. I am in favor of continuing to use the idea of a border fence. First, it keeps criminals in. This goal also requires other things, such as guards, else the prisoners would escape, but having a border fence certainly limits escapees. Second, it works to separate the prison from the outside w...
3a. Border Fence

Each year, several hundred people die attempting to cross the U.S. Mexico border. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immigrant_deaths_along_the_U.S.-Mexico_border A border fence would, on top of preventing illegal immigration, prevent these deaths from occurring. We need to control and document those who enter this country. Allowing people to walk across and wander in the desert for a few days before dying of dehydration is not fulfilling the promise of America. Nor is allowing somebody from anothe...
