I simply wanted to say that I believe that the use of God Bless America should continue to be used in our Government(treasury). I dont mean to add to the topic but I shall with the note I also believe the bible should be used in the swearing of oaths. Good luck to my fellow debater.
Although I agree with Hypnodoc in the comments section, I don't really feel like debating semantics (is that the word?) on this one. Just watch out next time. I thank troubleshootn for starting this debate. I ask that the voters vote based on the arguments presented and not on personal opinion. With that said, I negate: "[the] Use of God Bless America in our Government." CONTENTION I: America =/= Christian Nation. This nation was not founded on Christianity, and it should not act like it is. The very FIRST amendment to our constitution says that we have the freedom of religion. No where in the constitution does it even mention the words 'Christian,' 'Jesus,' or even 'God.' America is a MELTING POT where everyone can get a fresh start. America is not showing its principles when it says 'In God We Trust.' It belongs nowhere in our government. CONTENTION II: Only America? Yes, God Bless America. God, don't bless other countries? That doesn't make any sense. God said nothing about America in the Bible, nor do any people claim that he did. We are currently fighting a war in Iraq and against terrorism. Should we really feel that God should take a side? No. God [supposedly] blesses all people, not just those in America. In fact, Jesus and God would actually feel that war must end. He said, 'respond to evil with good,' which I have yet to see in America. He would condone all of us for becoming too power-hungry. There is no way he'd support what America was doing. CONTENTION III: Oaths. It is ridiculous to believe that swearing under God is useful. First, many people that go to court are not even Christian. So, why must they swear on a Bible? I'll swear on a book about the flying spaghetti monster, because it's completely ridiculous. There is no difference with the Bible. If they don't believe it, it's just pieces of paper. Second, it doesn't even have any effect. Numerous, probably hundreds of thousands, people lie under oath every year. It obviously has no effect on them. Therefore, there is really no reason to keep the oath, but there is still reason to take it out. I shall expand on my arguments later. I now patiently await my opponent's response. |

Yeah you're right, the word is semantics.
But this isn't a bad thing for your opponent, this is a bad thing for you...
I meant opening statement.
Please reconsider the resolutional phrase, as stated by Hypnodoc.
