Any form of centralized power, ranging from a global capitalist entity to a national government, takes liberty away from the masses. Only the governing body of the centralized power has total liberty. The masses can do anything they want unless the centralized power precieves it as wrong, immoral or a threat. http://www.debate.com/debates/Global-Capitalistic-Institutions/1/comments/ 2008-07-13T11:12:04-08:00 Should ethanol no longer be used in the United States in automobiles? http://www.debate.com/debates/Should-ethanol-no-longer-be-used-in-the-United-States-in-automobiles/1/ Ethanol currently is being used as an alternative fuel and fuel additive being used to hedge the cost of petroleum based gasoline. However, the current rate of consumption is unsustainble, and is quicking reaching the break even point in profitability. Several countries in Europe have ceased expanded use of ethanol since it has not proven that it is sustainable to serve as a viable alternative to gasoline. Furthermore, ethanol uses natural gas to create the heat levels to properly distill ethanol from corn. For these reasons and more, ethanol should continued to be used in the United States for automobiles. http://www.debate.com/debates/Should-ethanol-no-longer-be-used-in-the-United-States-in-automobiles/1/comments/ 2008-07-06T07:04:54-08:00 The use of credit scoring should be prohibited in hiring practices. http://www.debate.com/debates/The-use-of-credit-scoring-should-be-prohibited-in-hiring-practices./1/ The information that is used to create a credit score is derived from five main areas: types of credit in use (10%), new credit (10%), Length of credit history (15%), amounts owed (30%), and payment history (35%). Credit agencies do not use factors such as gender, race, nationality, or marital status. According to the Fair Isaac Corporation, "non-minority and minority applicants are equally likely to pay as agreed." Even though credit agencies do not directly use the factors listed previously, they still may have an unintended impact upon an individuals credit score. Anytime a person cosigns a loan or shares a joint bank account with someone, they are just as liable and responsible for good repayment. However, credit scoring is being used for more than just determining the financial risk of lending to a person. It is also being used to determine insurance rates, as an aid in employee selection, and in investigations. While the debate continues in the insurance field, a cha http://www.debate.com/debates/The-use-of-credit-scoring-should-be-prohibited-in-hiring-practices./1/comments/ 2008-07-05T18:09:30-08:00 We will never run out of oil http://www.debate.com/debates/We-will-never-run-out-of-oil/1/ There will always be oil. As oil depletes, alternative sources of fuel will become more economically viable. A switch from one fuel to another will occur before all the oil is depleted. http://www.debate.com/debates/We-will-never-run-out-of-oil/1/comments/ 2008-07-01T17:14:29-08:00 The minimum wage should be removed http://www.debate.com/debates/The-minimum-wage-should-be-removed/1/ The minimum wage increases the cost of employing people. By increasing costs, it effectively puts people out of work. http://www.debate.com/debates/The-minimum-wage-should-be-removed/1/comments/ 2008-07-01T16:42:46-08:00 Favoritism is shown in most fast food places and is a good thing to have in them. http://www.debate.com/debates/Favoritism-is-shown-in-most-fast-food-places-and-is-a-good-thing-to-have-in-them./1/ First of all, by a "good thing to have in them", i mean for the fast food place, not necessarily the customers/others. For this debate, I will use this definition of favoritism from dictionary.com. 1. the favoring of one person or group over others with equal claims Definition of claim (also from dictionary.com)-The sum of money demanded -------------------------------------------------------------- The "Employee of The Month" award commonly used in fast food restaurants is an example of this favoritism. What it is basically saying is this: "I, the manager believe this person (The EOM) to have worked slightly (or drastically) harder than the other employees that work for the same pay, so I like him/her better." It could also be saying "This person has a good attitude and I like him/her, so he/she is the Employee of The Month." Now you might ask how is it that this type of favoritism should be shown in this restaurant. For the employees who actually keep track of the EO http://www.debate.com/debates/Favoritism-is-shown-in-most-fast-food-places-and-is-a-good-thing-to-have-in-them./1/comments/ 2008-06-26T11:11:51-08:00 Topic #13: Limiting EI ought to be a more important social goal than increasing EF. http://www.debate.com/debates/Topic-13-Limiting-EI-ought-to-be-a-more-important-social-goal-than-increasing-EF./1/ Limiting economic inequality ought to be a more important social goal than increasing economic freedom. Laymans Terms Economic Inequality (EI): Rich and Poor, aka, not having the same finacial staus Economic Freedom (EF): Being able to send your money however you want, and inversly, varying pay whether high or low. Social Goal: positive outcome provided by and revered by a society, (ex: murder should be illegal, friends are good), aka, people like it. [I hope we will not have to argue over exact definitions, these are just simplified versions of much more complex ones that say, for all intents and purposes, the same thing for the better understanding of the reader] Therefore, I'm arguing society (does NOT specifically mean American, so please don't bring Constitutional issues up, unless you also want to argue on the specific economic laws of all 93 other world nations as well) should basically want to eliminate the financial classes and ensure we all have money rather than http://www.debate.com/debates/Topic-13-Limiting-EI-ought-to-be-a-more-important-social-goal-than-increasing-EF./1/comments/ 2008-07-03T19:01:21-08:00 Bush's U.S. stimulus package of 2008 will not be very successful. http://www.debate.com/debates/Bush-s-U.S.-stimulus-package-of-2008-will-not-be-very-successful./1/ Since the last debate on this topic was so miserably un-eventful, I decided to challenge Darkmaff666 to a real debate now (lets see if you really worked on your case like you said you would). Again, that the stimulus package as is will not significantly help the looming economic recession. I will prove I. That such a plan will not help II. That the waste of money will make things work III. Why it will not work and what Bush should have done His plan, like all his other plan for the economy, do nothing for those who really need the help and only provide small benefits to the middle class. House prices are falling, debt is rising, jobs are being lost, gas is outrageously expensive, and money is being squandered by the Bush administration. This so called stimulus package is just another example of that. http://www.debate.com/debates/Bush-s-U.S.-stimulus-package-of-2008-will-not-be-very-successful./1/comments/ 2008-06-15T22:22:36-08:00 The Law of Diminishing Returns Applies to Kittens http://www.debate.com/debates/The-Law-of-Diminishing-Returns-Applies-to-Kittens/1/ The Law of Diminishing Returns states that for each additional unit of input added to a production system, there is less additional output. Planting one kilogram of seeds might yield one ton of wheat, but two kilograms of seeds will not result in two tons of wheat. By the same logic, having two kittens is more enjoyable than having one kitten, but not twice as enjoyable. If you have one kitten, assuming you are a cat person, you gather some enjoyment from it. It cuddles, does cute cat things, etc. Having two cats is indeed more enjoyable; more cute cat things are done. However, dividing your attention between multiple kittens means you do not get the full benefit from each cat. Kitten A might be doing something entertaining while you are playing with Kitten B, for example. Since your time and attention are finite, there is no way to fully appreciate multiple cats, particularly in large quantities. If you had one hundred kittens, would you even notice if another were added? http://www.debate.com/debates/The-Law-of-Diminishing-Returns-Applies-to-Kittens/1/comments/ 2008-06-10T21:54:32-08:00 Under normal conditions, an average person CAN eat just one Lay's potato chip. http://www.debate.com/debates/Under-normal-conditions-an-average-person-CAN-eat-just-one-Lay-s-potato-chip./1/ I stand in affirmation of the topic, "An average person CAN eat just one Lay's potato chip." For those of you who don't know, this is the slogan for Lay's: "Betcha can't eat just one!" Great, huh? Unfourtunatly, this company is lying to you. Here are some definitions for the round (dictionary.com): Can: to be able to; have the ability, power, or skill to Average: typical; common; ordinary First off, there are no chemicals in Lay's that make it hard to eat just one. Potatoes, nor salt, are phyiscal addicting. Therefore, there is nothing in the potato chip that makes your body addicted to the chips nor even compels you to eat more. Secondly, a person could easily take a chip, eat it, and move on with their day. People have too much to be worried about to be eating potato chips. Also, most people are concered with their health, so they would only eat one to get the taste and not the calories. Finally, there are other things they can be snacking on. Lesotho lacks natural resources, and the people are desperately poor. Plus, almost a 1/3 of the population is infected with HIV. I'm not saying that Lesotho won't achieve economic prosperity as a fact, but I do believe that it will take an incredibly long time before the country's economy can put up fierce competition with South Africa, and that it will take an even longer time for the country to gain any global recognition, because of its economy. Again, I'm not saying that the country's inability gain any prosperity is inevitable, but rather, it will be quite some time before it can become a world player. I'd say life several decades, or maybe even a century or two. http://www.debate.com/debates/Is-it-possible-for-Lesotho-to-become-economically-stabled/1/comments/ 2008-06-21T14:01:04-08:00 Concerning Postmen http://www.debate.com/debates/Concerning-Postmen/1/ Someone with a sense of humour please. Dogs should be legally allowed to attack and bite postmen (or postwomen/ postpeople?). In fact, I propose opening this law up so that all animals would be allowed to attack postmen when delivering letters, packages etc. You ask why? Is it not blatently obvious? 1) It would be good for dogs in the society. Not only would they recieve extra exercise and fun from attacking the postmen, they would be off their owners hands for a while, giving them the much needed break (dogs can be very like toddlers- cute, drooling, everything ends up in their mouths, but loud and annoying) 2) A TV show called "Postwatch" would be set up to telivise the attacking. This would be shown only at night, similar to "Crimewatch", except less pointless. This would recieve a large audience, as it would make great telivision. 3) Less court cases involving dog bites would be going on, therefore saving the time of the court people, who should be more concerned wit http://www.debate.com/debates/Concerning-Postmen/1/comments/ 2008-06-04T05:13:00-08:00 MUHAHAHA You will lose http://www.debate.com/debates/MUHAHAHA-You-will-lose/1/ MUHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAH YOU WILL LOSE MUAFHADSFLHASDFKJASDFJKASDFJKASDFJKASDLJFASDKJFALDSKFLAJSDFAJLKDSF http://www.debate.com/debates/MUHAHAHA-You-will-lose/1/comments/ 2008-06-03T21:00:15-08:00 The United States Federal Government should help to modernize third-world countries. http://www.debate.com/debates/The-United-States-Federal-Government-should-help-to-modernize-third-world-countries./1/ "Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant." -- Elie Wiesel Clarification: A common misconception regarding third-world countries is that "the poverty of the developing nations can be attributed to their failure to innovate, resulting in technological and therefore economic deficit" [1]. That is simply untrue. Western civilizations were able to expand and modernize through our colonial prowess; we subjected underdeveloped nations to blatantly unfair and outrageous policies such as slavery, manipulated labor, exploitation of resources, unequal trade, and military intimidation. In a sense, we [the Western world] are responsible for their inability to progress and transform. Through imperialism (and force), we have enslaved the individuals living in third world countries by forcing them to comply with our wants and needs. We continue to let them live in poverty so we can p http://www.debate.com/debates/The-United-States-Federal-Government-should-help-to-modernize-third-world-countries./1/comments/ 2008-06-06T19:00:26-08:00 Execution is more important than an idea for a successful business. http://www.debate.com/debates/Execution-is-more-important-than-an-idea-for-a-successful-business./1/ For the purpose of this debate: Business: an act of providing a valuable product/service in return of some type of, usually financial, gains. Idea: a product/service idea for a business. Execution: a process to build and market a business around that idea. Having a brilliant idea but not executing it properly leads to nothing but "yet another failure". People often wait for a great idea before starting a business but that fact it that -- it doesn't really matter how great an idea is; whats matters most is how that idea is executed. Having said that, now, I wait to hear and rebuttal my opponent's arguments (if any). Is it more logical for me to not enjoy four cups of cocoa than it is for me to enjoy a quarter of the cups? First of all, it is economincally stupid to spend the $3 on cocoa mix, when nobody will ever enjoy it. Second of all, it is just stupid for me to have cocoa, which I love, and not enjoy any of it because it is bland and mundane- a flavorless brown liquid really. And it really only costs $.30 a pack if you do the math. That's $1.20 a cup. This is a reasonable price for good cocoa. Good cocoa at Starbucks could cost you up to $4.80. Of course, a $.30 cup of cocoa is nice but please this is a prime example of: You get what you pay for. http://www.debate.com/debates/It-is-hardly-a-significant-waste-for-me-to-use-4-packs-of-cocoa-for-one-cup./1/comments/ 2008-05-02T22:00:07-08:00 That the economic-stimulus act of 2008 will sucessfully mitigate economic slowdowns over this year http://www.debate.com/debates/That-the-economic-stimulus-act-of-2008-will-sucessfully-mitigate-economic-slowdowns-over-this-year/1/ a one time "rebate check", while it may provide atemporary boost to many working american families struggling with the current downturn, is not going to provide the type of sustained income growth nessary to restore consumer confidence......spoken by senator ron paul..i am against the resolution that states...That the economic-stimulus act of 2008 will sucessfully mitigate economic slowdowns over the next year... the stimulus act will only add on to US deficits... the congressional budget office." options for respondding to short term economic weaknes" jan 2008 stated that.....poorly timed policies may do harm by aggravating infltioanry pressures and needlesly increasing federal debt and if they stimulate the economy after it has already started to recover..........................yeah beat that.....its all i got up to now so sorry... http://www.debate.com/debates/That-the-economic-stimulus-act-of-2008-will-sucessfully-mitigate-economic-slowdowns-over-this-year/1/comments/ 2008-04-17T06:00:57-08:00 SOMEONE SHOULD SELL CARBONATED GRAVY http://www.debate.com/debates/SOMEONE-SHOULD-SELL-CARBONATED-GRAVY/1/ I THINK SOMEONE SHOULD SELL CARBONATED GRAVY.
