Apropos animal testing, what a deplorable procedure a vivisection is. Every year, tens of millions of animals are dissected, infected, injected, gassed, burned and blinded in hidden laboratories on college campuses and research facilities throughout the U.S. Of course there are benefits, but why should innocent animals have to suffer? The answer is: an animal's life is considered less valuable than a human's. Why? Animals veritably do not have a lesser capacity for pain then humans. Although it may sound anthropomorphic, animals can suffer emotionally. When an animal is separated from its young it grieves. Of course an animal can suffer pain. Most animals have the same pain sensory receptors that humans do. So why are they considered less valuable than humans? Animals don't have a voice and can't represent themselves in our society. Because of that, they must accept whatever fate humans impos http://www.debate.com/debates/Animal-Testing/5/comments/ 2008-09-02T17:24:04-08:00 Pesci-Vegetarianism is beneficial http://www.debate.com/debates/Pesci-Vegetarianism-is-beneficial/1/ (Voting Period) Before I start this argument, I just want to say that I am in favor of vegetarianism, I am one myself, but I do not want to force people to be vegetarian, I just want them to see that there are benefits, and like any diet, it does have risks, but it also has solutions. A pesci vegetarian is a vegetarian that will eat dairy and fish. In many ways this is a beneficial move. Like with any diet, if done the wrong way, it can have health problems. But if done overall well, it reduces the risk for circulatory diseases such as heart disease and cholesterol problems. People will point out problems such as iron and protein. Sufficient iron levels can be achieved through black beans, cashews, kidney beans, lentils, oatmeal, raisins, black-eyed peas, soybeans, spinach, many breakfast cereals, sunflower seeds, chickpeas, veggie burgers, tomato juice, tempeh, molasses, dairy products, eggs, fish, and whole-wheat bread. It's another classic debate of public safety or public freedom... Just for fun, I want to make this a LD debate (since I got it from the NFL possible topics for 07-08), so if you accept this debate, please provide a Value and a Criterion. Thanks, and with that, I will begin my opening case... -Resolved: Public health concerns justify government violation of pharmaceutical patents. I. Value- Public Welfare In this debate, you will see the greatest value as being public welfare. There's no doubt that people who are suffering are due their safety. People who are abusing their patent deserved to have it violated until they can get it under control. Until then, it is justified for the government to protect their people. II. Criterion- Prudence Prudence is defined as basically as doing what is wise... being smart. The side that is prudent within this debate is Pro as they care for the welfare of their people instead of just a http://www.debate.com/debates/Resolved-Public-health-concerns-justify-government-violation-of-pharmaceutical-patents./1/comments/ 2008-03-30T19:31:36-08:00 veganisim is a good life choice http://www.debate.com/debates/veganisim-is-a-good-life-choice/1/ (Voting Period) in todays world, millions of people gourge on meat and expecially in america the human abuses his right to eat meat and engourges in the fact that man is at the top of the foodchain http://www.debate.com/debates/veganisim-is-a-good-life-choice/1/comments/ 2008-08-21T07:07:07-08:00 Die deutsche Bundesregierung should quarantine HIV-positive people. http://www.debate.com/debates/Die-deutsche-Bundesregierung-should-quarantine-HIV-positive-people./1/ (Voting Period) There is currently no effective cure for HIV, which leads to AIDS and, subsequently, thousands of Germans die of this highly contagious disease each year. Die deutsche Bundesregierung (German federal government) should screen the entire populations for HIV and those found positive should be segregated and transported in sealed railway carriages direct to isolated convalescing camps where guests would be provided with food and accommodation in return for working in factories located within the compound. Obviously, some of the HIV-positive guests may be too sick to work so, in order to cover the cost of their bed and board, their assets would be seized and liquidated, which is only fair to the German taxpayer. In order to stop the spread of the virus to the outside world, the guests will be invited not to leave the camps and, in order to ensure their compliance with this request, the compounds would be surrounded with high security fences, with armed hosts http://www.debate.com/debates/Die-deutsche-Bundesregierung-should-quarantine-HIV-positive-people./1/comments/ 2008-08-19T09:01:16-08:00 Obese customers should pay more for flights. http://www.debate.com/debates/Obese-customers-should-pay-more-for-flights./1/ (Voting Period) With the rising price of gas and the growing costs of airfare, some airlines are starting to opt in programs that charge fees for passengers who are visibly over a certain weight. The reason for this is simple: 1) Obese customers cost more to insure. Those who are obese are more prone to high-altitudes medical situations, thus airline insurance for such scenarios go up. Since they currently don't charge insurance based on individual fliers, it seems unfair to charge everyone for the lifestyle choices of a select few. This is greatly different from those who are medically unsound by nature, such as seniors, since except in VERY rare instances, being overweight is a choice people make. 2) Obese customers take up more room. The current trend in flight engineering is to maximize the seating space to have as many people sit comfortably as possible. When a customer is obviously taking up more than his or her chair space and has in fact occupied half of oth http://www.debate.com/debates/Obese-customers-should-pay-more-for-flights./1/comments/ 2008-08-06T06:35:02-08:00 Legal Recreational Marijuana Revisited http://www.debate.com/debates/Legal-Recreational-Marijuana-Revisited/1/ (Voting Period) NOTE: Because it has already been established in many other debates, we know that marijuana is harmful to one's health. Unfortunately, so is alcohol, tobacco and...gasp...even the hamburgers we get from our favorite fast food chains so please don't waste your time proving that aspect. Recreational marijuana use should be legalized. Just like any other legal drug, it comes with it's own set of responsibilities and restrictions. Sure, it is unhealthy, but no worse than many other legal drugs. I feel like every other legal prescription commercial I see, has warnings about possible side effects, even "death." I am not a professional debater, and certainly not an experienced one on any level, so I know this may be unorthodox, but PLEASE list your problems with my statement with your arguments and it'd make me happy to answer/refute each one of them. :) http://www.debate.com/debates/Legal-Recreational-Marijuana-Revisited/1/comments/ 2008-08-03T13:10:44-08:00 Should kids go to school http://www.debate.com/debates/Should-kids-go-to-school/1/ (Voting Period) Kids should go to school because it offers them a lifetime of learning. It offers them friends and a better life for the future because, what's a life without an education. I've lived in Europe, Asia, Canada, and the US and have some experience with health alternatives so I'll take up the PRO. I would like to argue a position in favor of universal health care for the US. Such an issue cannot be proven in absolute terms, but I believe there is enough evidence to make a persuasive case to reform toward such a goal. http://www.debate.com/debates/Universal-Health-Care/7/comments/ 2008-07-08T07:44:19-08:00 why do u agree with abortions? http://www.debate.com/debates/why-do-u-agree-with-abortions/1/ (Voting Period) i am against abortions because u are taking away an unborns life away. and that should be against the law. cause it is like murder to a human. My premise is that the human body is capable of reaching high levels of muscle mass and low levels of bodyfat, to a degree that they could compete on a professional bodybuilding stage. It is my contention that supplements and drugs are at the very bottom of the list of what determines ones potential as a bodybuilder. The first factor is genetics. We all know people who are very muscular, while never having set foot inside a gym. The next level is even in my book and consists of nothing more than proper training and recovery. This means stimulating the body through intense exercise, then allowing adequate rest and macronutrient intake for the muscle tissue to rebuild itself bigger and usually stronger than before. In time, a proper combination of the aforementioned elements could result in a hig http://www.debate.com/debates/It-is-possible-to-become-a-top-level-bodybuilder-without-resorting-to-anabolic-steroids./1/comments/ 2008-06-12T14:09:12-08:00 Resolved: an infirmary doctor should tranquilize an unruly prisoner. http://www.debate.com/debates/Resolved-an-infirmary-doctor-should-tranquilize-an-unruly-prisoner./1/ (Voting Period) ~~~ SIDE EFFECTS ~~~ At Grace Amazing Hospital Penny Zillion's a doc. She helps in the infirmary, for jail down the block. A prisoner became enraged and injury seemed nigh. The guards asked her to inject him, else they would give a try. Penny is not an enforcer, she will not stand for pain. But if she helps or she does not, will greater harm obtain? Penny Zillion has a medical practical at Grace Amazing Hospital and helps out in the local prison infirmary. One day she is asked to give a tranquilizing injection to an unruly prisoner. Penny feels that her job is to care for patients, not participate in their punishment. She believes that if she does not inject the prisoner, the latter will be roughly handled and some guards may also be injured. Round 1 Reasoning Mill might urge Penny to do as she pleases as long as that does not harm others. A tranquilizer administered by a medical professional is unlikely to harm the prisoner. Before I begin the debate, I would like to say that the spelling of "Donut" is merely the shortened term of "Doughnut" in persuasive American English, and that a "Donut" has the same overall definition and description as a "Doughnut". Don't even try to nail me on that one. Also I would like to remind my opposition that this is a one-round debate, so throw everything you have to say out there. As I was saying, I am against blue-frosted cake donuts, for a number of reasons. I will first evaluate on the nutritional value approach of a cake donut: *The average plain cake donut has 18-19 grams of fat, with 9 grams of saturated fat. Based on the average, 2,000 calorie per day diet, this is 46% of your daily value of saturated fat-nearly half in one simple treat. *Backtracking to the total fat amount, on the average 2,000 calorie per day diet, one cake donut equals out to 30% of your daily value of fat. That means eat http://www.debate.com/debates/Blue-Frosted-Cake-Donuts/1/comments/ 2008-06-01T13:23:57-08:00 It is illogical to choose birth as the milestone for attaining rights. http://www.debate.com/debates/It-is-illogical-to-choose-birth-as-the-milestone-for-attaining-rights./1/ (Voting Period) Okay, CON, you have first move. Common sense will prevail in this debate, and common sense tells us that nothing in this world is free, LEAST of all, socialized medicine. There are no free lunches. Somebody has to pay, somebody always pays. I will allow CON to make their claim why society should transition over to socialized medicine before I begin my excoriation. http://www.debate.com/debates/Socialized-medicine-is-an-abysmal-failure/1/comments/ 2008-05-22T01:09:17-08:00 is america's food supply to unsafe to eat http://www.debate.com/debates/is-america-s-food-supply-to-unsafe-to-eat/1/ (Voting Period) i think america's food is too unsafe to eat. please tell me your opinion! http://www.debate.com/debates/is-america-s-food-supply-to-unsafe-to-eat/1/comments/ 2008-05-21T23:01:19-08:00 Solving the obesity problem - my method http://www.debate.com/debates/Solving-the-obesity-problem-my-method/1/ (Voting Period) The only rule regarding this debate is that a sense of humour is required Obesity = a condition in which the natural energy reserve, stored in the fatty tissue of humans and other mammals, exceeds healthy limits. It is commonly defined as a body mass index (weight divided by height squared) of 30 kg/m2 or higher. Obesity is a growing concern (pun not intended). I have a few suggestions on how to solve this problem, if you disagree, well you know what to do! 1) The overweight people are simply "slagged out of it", i.e. full permission would be given for people to mock or ridicule the unfortunate fatties. Suggested methods of slagging are as follows: a) verbal abuse b) a rubber stamp with "fattie" or "please don't eat me" engraved on it would be made available to all healthy people (i.e. people a healthy weight). They could use this stamp as they pleased on the nearest obese person c) hanging posters of healthy people on the walls as a constant remind http://www.debate.com/debates/Solving-the-obesity-problem-my-method/1/comments/ 2008-05-19T23:02:58-08:00
